Google has quietly rolled out one of the most requested features in Gmail’s history. You can now change your Gmail username — the part before @gmail.com — without creating a new account or losing any data.
For over two decades, users were stuck with whatever username they picked in their teens. That “coolguy2003” or “sparkleprincess87” address became a permanent badge of digital adolescence, carried through job applications and professional correspondence. Google finally removed that constraint.

What Changes and What Stays
Your new username becomes your primary Gmail address immediately. All existing emails, Google Drive files, Photos libraries, YouTube history, and connected app data remain intact. The migration is transparent to your data.
Your old username does not vanish. Google keeps it active as an alternate address, routing any mail sent to the old address into your inbox. You will not miss messages from contacts who have not updated their address books.
How to Change Your Gmail Username
The process takes under two minutes if you have access to the feature. Open your Google Account settings and navigate to Personal info > Email > Google Account email.
Look for the Change Google Account email button. If it appears, tap it and enter your desired username. The system checks availability instantly. Confirm, and the change propagates across all Google services within minutes.
Current Limitations
Google imposes two hard constraints. You can only change your username once every 12 months, so choose carefully. The feature is also rolling out gradually — currently available only in the United States, with broader availability expected in the coming months.
The old username remains yours indefinitely as an alias. You cannot release it for someone else to claim, which prevents impersonation but also means those short, desirable usernames stay locked even after abandonment.
Should You Change Yours?
If your current username contains personal information you no longer want public — birth years, old handles, real names in combination with numbers — this is your exit. If your address is professional and clean, there is no urgency. Wait until the feature reaches your region and assess whether the cosmetic upgrade justifies consuming your annual change allowance.
The process is irreversible for 12 months. Pick something that will age as well as your current address has not.
